U.S. Bank Stadium


Gephart Electric, through our joint venture Build 23, was selected as the design-assist electrical contractor to build U.S. Bank Stadium. This 1,750,000 SF stadium located in the heart of Minneapolis, MN is home to the Minnesota Vikings and plays host to concerts, community and private events, and many other premier sporting events including Super Bowl LII in early 2018. Built on the demolished site of the Metrodome and towering nearly 30 stories high, this multi-use stadium features over 66,000 seats, six levels, seven club lounges, 131 suites, 979 restrooms, 430 concession stands, 33 escalators, and 11 elevators.


Despite the massive size of the stadium, Gephart was often working in confined quarters and restricted work areas. With limited space, the team relied on BIM services and Trimble Total Station to determine available pathways and to place branch and feeder conduit. To reduce jobsite waste and to save space, Gephart utilized off-site storage for prefabrication of light fixtures, conduit racks, and cable tray racks. Additional items incorporated during the pre-construction phase of the project to improve function and reduce cost included sports lighting element reductions based on calculations, alternate light fixture design, aluminum feeder conductors, expanded use of underground feeder installations, early completion of permanent power to reduce construction heating costs and allow early start-up activities for mechanical, fire protection and finishes, switchgear configuration modifications to save on equipment costs and minimize footprint to allow additional architectural space, generator reductions based on calculations, relocation of generators to allow additional architectural space, and early procurement based on modeling efforts.


Build 23 installed more than 21,000 LED light fixtures and the first LED sports lighting system in a new NFL venue. Additionally, the team performed all electrical and technology systems installations including high voltage service and distribution, LED lighting, LED color changing systems with DMX controls, lighting controls, food service equipment, HVAC equipment, sports lighting, theatrical lighting, voice/data, bowl and concourse sound systems, broadcast cabling, access control/CCTV, IPTV, fire alarm, DAS, and WiFi. In total, there are three electrical services each 1200 Amps at 13.8 KV equating to almost 18 billion watts.


Gephart identified and incorporated over $2.5 million of accepted value analysis options during the pre-construction process for this highly visible project with multiple stakeholders. Our contribution to the design process identified alternative means and methods, materials, layouts and work sequences that reduced cost, increased efficiency and reduced schedule durations to support critical path milestones allowing us to complete the job six weeks early. Additionally, we exceeded the Target Group Business and Workforce Utilization goals set for the project by working alongside our valued woman-owned Construction Partnering Program (CPP) partner Gunnar Electric.
